Husband fatally shoots wife, himself at Daytona rehabilitation center
DAYTONA BEACH FL December 1 2019 — A husband shot his wife dead Friday at a rehabilitation center and then killed himself, police said. He left behind cards for a cremation business.
William Shook, 71, of Port Orange, went to visit his wife, Jane Shook, also 71, about 9:30 a.m. at the Daytona Beach Health and Rehabilitation Center at 1055 Third St., the report states.
Nurses told police that Jane Shook was “well and healthy” outside her room when her husband arrived, according to the report. Jane Shook told her husband that she wanted to go home.
William Shook replied “I can’t but come to your room. I want to talk to you,” the report states.
They entered her room. Then the nurses heard two gunshots, the report said.
When the nurses entered the room, they found Jane Shook dead in a recliner with a gunshot to her forehead, the report states.
The nurses found William Shook dead in the bathroom with a gunshot wound to his own forehead. A .38-caliber revolver was on the floor next to him, the jpolice said.
Police found two cremation mortuary business cards on separate tables. Classical music was playing in the room.
Police Chief Craig Capri said the staff knew the husband because he had come in before to visit.
Police spokesman Kelsey Harris said the wife had advanced dementia.
Representatives of Daytona Beach Health and Rehabilitation did not have any comment Friday but said the company would be releasing a statement.
