Santa Fe NM Sept 18 2018 Police arrested a 29-year-old man after he bypassed airport security and ran up a runway toward a boarding flight at Santa Fe Regional Airport, then led a chase through other nearby facilities, according to a criminal complaint.

Ramiro Ontiveros-Rodriguez of Santa Fe was charged with four counts of criminal trespassing at the airport, the city sewage plant and the state Army National Guard Aviation Facility.

Ontiveros-Rodriguez entered the airport terminal at 6:18 a.m. Saturday and asked in Spanish to buy a ticket to El Paso, according to the complaint by Santa Fe Police Department Officer Patrick Trujillo.

Trujillo gave this account: Video surveillance showed Ontiveros-Rodriguez watching the flight boarding process until 7:30 a.m. when he jumped a 6-foot wall by baggage claim onto the tarmac.

As he ran toward a United Airlines plane, an airport worker asked him to stop. Ontiveros-Rodriguez continued to run across the runway toward the National Guard aviation facility.

Members of the National Guard intercepted Ontiveros-Rodriguez about 7:45 a.m., and he told them he was running from people who were trying to kill him. When the National Guard members mentioned calling the police, Ontiveros-Rodriguez ran off.

He jumped a 7-foot fence topped with barbed wire and ran toward the sewage plant. About 9:50 a.m., police received another call from the airport saying Ontiveros-Rodriguez had returned.

He tried to flee again but when he tried to jump another 7-foot fence topped with barbed wire, his pants caught in the wire. A security guard caught him.

Ontiveros-Rodriguez was arrested and treated for injuries from the barbed wire. He was booked into the Santa Fe County jail without bond.

According to the criminal complaint, city police met with a representative from Homeland Security who did not pursue criminal charges but requested Ontiveros-Rodriguez be held until Monday in order for them to speak to him in reference to an immigration detainer.
