Johns Hopkins University student athlete fell to her death

Police are continuing their investigation after a Johns Hopkins University student athlete fell to her death on Thursday from a high rise building.
Baltimore police spokesman T. J. Smith said at a news conference Monday that it appears that Abigail Bastien of Sandusky, Ohio, fell a significant distance. Smith says police are still awaiting toxicology results, but “everything points” to her death being accidental.
Basient, who was entering her sophomore year, was a sprinter on the track and field team and a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. The university says Bastien’s coaches say she always had a smile on her face and loved being a student-athlete.
No foul play is suspected but there are still some unanswered questions a police spokesperson said.
The university said earlier it “remains committed to assisting Abby’s family in whatever way we can in this heartbreaking moment and to providing support to all those affected by her passing. If you or a friend needs support over this weekend, we encourage you to reach out.”
The university did say last week it increased security presence in the area of the building “in an abundance of caution.”
“In the meantime, we urge you to continue to honor Abby’s memory and to remain steadfast in your support for each other,” said Sunil Kumar, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Daniel G. Ennis, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, in a statement.
