Jury convicts Wichita man of killing QuikTrip security guard
Wichita KS October 24, 2023 A jury has found a 44-year-old man guilty in the shooting death of a QuikTrip security guard in downtown Wichita more than two years ago.
Laroy West was convicted Friday first-degree murder in the shooting of 39-year-old Will Robinson on May 5, 2021. The jury also found him guilty on two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of criminal possession of a firearm. West’s trial began Monday.
Sedgwick County Judge Bruce Brown is scheduled to sentence West on December 8.
Wichita police said previously that Robinson, a former WPD officer, was shot after escorting West out of the QuikTrip formerly located at Murdock and Broadway for being disruptive. Once outside, police said there was some kind of physical fight, West shot Robinson and then ran away.
Officers arrested West the next day. Robinson died the day after that, on May 7.
Robinson worked for the Wichita Police Department for about 10 years and had worked for QuikTrip for more than a year. He left behind his wife and two children.
Kansas Department of Corrections records show West has prior convictions in Wyandotte County of theft, burglary, drug sales and attempted aggravated battery. He served several prison stints in Kansas from 1996 to 2012.
