Kane County corrections officer charged with sexually assaulting inmate
Kane County IL July 23 2018 A Kane County corrections officer was accused of sexually assaulting an inmate, officials said.
John H. Johnson, 52, of Elgin, was charged with sexual assault, custodial sexual misconduct and official misconduct, officials said.
Johnson, who also is a Elgin library security guard, turned himself into authorities Friday night after an arrest warrant was issued earlier that day, officials said. Johnson is being held on $150,000 bail in Kane County jail.
The June 23 incident at the jail was reported to the Kane County sheriff’s office June 25, according to a news release. Johnson was placed on administrative leave when he reported to work June 26.
Johnson also was placed on administrative leave at his job at Gail Borden library in Elgin, library officials said.
Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer requested the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force conduct an independent investigation into allegations of misconduct.
“My office does not tolerate officer misconduct and takes all such allegations seriously,” Kramer said in the news release. “I expect all officers and staff to treat all members of the community with dignity and respect.”
Johnson, who has worked as a Kane County corrections officer since February 2004, was assigned to booking and intake at the time of the incident, officials said.
“We as public safety officers are obligated to seek justice for all of the public, including those who themselves are accused of compromising public safety,” Kane County state’s attorney Joe McMahon said in a statement.
If convicted, Johnson faces a four to 15 year maximum prison sentence.
