Knoxville officer shot man who took control of her Taser during fight
Knoxville TN Nov 14 2017 A Knoxville Police Department officer shot a man who took control of her Taser during a fight in North Knoxville on Sunday, police said.
The bullet struck the man in the arm and grazed his chest. He was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with injuries that didn’t appear to be life-threatening. The officer was treated for scrapes and bruises at the hospital.
About 8:50 a.m., police responded to a report of a suspicious person on East Inskip Drive near Scheel Road.
A female officer stopped to question two people, a man and a woman, who appeared to be carrying stolen items from nearby homes, KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk said.
The man got into a fight with the officer and managed to get her to the ground on her back, DeBusk said.
The man took control of her Taser, DeBusk said, and the officer fired her gun once, striking him.
The 33-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was described as homeless. Police had at least one outstanding warrant for his arrest, DeBusk said.
The woman is being questioned by Knox County Sheriff’s Office investigators. She also had an outstanding arrest warrant for failing to appear on charges filed in Idaho, DeBusk said.
KCSO is handling the investigation. KCSO and KPD have an agreement to investigate each other’s officer-involved shootings.
Sunday’s shooting marks the first by a KPD officer since July 2014, according to DeBusk.
