Las Cruces Public Schools security officer heads to assist Puerto Rico
Las Cruces NM Oct 10 2017 A security officer from Las Cruces Public Schools is getting ready to aid in emergency efforts relief efforts to people devastated in Puerto Rico after recent hurricanes.
Hurricane Maria proved to be catastrophic when it hit Puerto Rico last month.
The Category 4 hurricane has left millions on the island without water and electricity.
But there’s one man from Las Cruces Public Schools who is hoping to help.
Campus security officer Tim Zagorski retired as a sergeant from the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s office in 2003.
He’s has over 40 years of experience in emergency care, and he is now part of a federal disaster medical assistance team in New Mexico.
“We provide care for sick and injured. We provide care for folks that have been displaced from nursing homes, from their private residences that may have medical issues,” Zagorski said.
In 2016, Zagorski was deployed to Baton Rouge Louisiana to help several hundreds of people displaced by flooding.
Now, he’s joining a team of 36 emergency personnel members ranging from physicians, nurses and EMT’s to help send aid to Puerto Rico.
“We’ve all seen the news of the devastation, you know — food water, electricity, housing is all a major need for these folks,” Zagorski said.
Zagorski said his job is to help in emergency efforts such as setting up radio communication.
He adds that his team could be sent out for two weeks, but that could change, especially if they need more help.
“I’m proud of being a team member. We all have our our individual parts but we all gel together very well and depend on each other and lean on each other to get our mission accomplished,” Zagorski said.
Zagorski is set to leave for Puerto Rico sometime next week.
