Las Vegas parking enforcement gives the “boot” the boot and replaces it with Barnacle
LAS VEGAS NV Sept 28 2019 The City of Las Vegas is giving “the boot” the boot and replacing it with the barnacle.
As Las Vegas Parking Enforcement Officer Gibson explains in a Sept. 3 video, the traditional boot (that unsightly hunk of metal enforcement officers attach to the wheel of a car with too many parking tickets) can damage vehicles if the driver doesn’t realize it’s there.
Also, officers can be in harm’s way when attaching it on busy city streets.
These are just a couple of reasons the city is replacing the boot with new technology meant to be safer and less damaging to vehicles with excessive unpaid parking tickets.
This safer method is called the barnacle, a large, heavy hunk of plastic that, with the help of a powerful suctioning ability, sticks to the vehicle’s windshield.
So, unless the driver has x-ray vision, they’re not going anywhere.
To remove it, drivers must go to the website or call the number listed on the barnacle.
Then, the driver must pay with credit or debit card the outstanding parking fines. Once that’s done, the driver will get a four-digit code that will unlock the barnacle.
After the barnacle is unlocked, the driver must fold it up and drop it off at any dropbox in the city to have their deposit returned.
As of Sept. 5, the city says that 8,410 people were on the list to get the barnacle, amounting to more than 23,000 unpaid parking tickets.
