Las Vegas security guard shoots-kills dog-questions linger
LAS VEGAS NV June 21 2017– More than a week after a homeless man’s dog is killed, there are still many unanswered questions.
The animal was shot by a security guard outside of a grocery store.
Gene Marshall has been homeless for years. His dog Dexter, an Akita mix, was 5-years-old.
“I could just tell he was thinking ‘why does it hurt so bad’? I could see it in his eyes and he was scared,” Marshall said. “Everything I do, I still turn around and go ‘come on Dexter’.”
Dexter was shot and killed last Saturday by a security guard. It happened while Marshall was looking for food next to dumpsters outside of the Albertson’s near Jones Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue.
The circumstances that led up to Dexter’s death is still unclear. Marshall says Dexter was trying to play with the security guard when he was shot.
However, CPI Security Solutions didn’t return to phone calls to 8 News Now.
Metro Police say the case remains open.
Tanya Fillipone owns her own rescue called Pekes, Paws and Tails. She also helps the homeless and called Dexter easy-going, gentle and calm.
“That was everything to him and when you’re on the street and you have an animal, it usually is your whole world,” Fillipone said. “He made sure that Dexter always had everything first.”
Multiple attempts were made to contact CPI Security Solutions to find out if the security guard felt threatened in any way by Dexter.
Meanwhile, Fillipone is searching for a program to help Marshall with his grief.
