LEXINGTON, Ky. August 15 2020 A probationary Lexington police officer has been terminated after accidentally firing his personally-owned handgun while off duty.

According to a release from the police department, Officer Nickolas Edge reported an incident Sunday where he accidentally fired his gun. The shot reportedly hit an individual whose finger was injured in the incident.

Edge returned to duty on Tuesday, August 11 where he was immediately terminated by Chief Lawrence Weathers.

On Tuesday, August 11, Edge returned to duty, his first shift since the incident. He was immediately terminated by Chief Lawrence Weathers.

Edge came to the department in April of 2019. No charges are expected to be filed by the injured individual.

The reward adds to $1,000 that Crime Stoppers is offering in hopes that information from the public leads to an arrest in connection with the shooting of Kenneth Love II, whose relatives, pastor and a friend on Wednesday remembered as a friendly man who loved his family, God and his church community. Deputies found Love after responding to the shooting at the unlicensed dispensary on Troy Street near Sweetwater Road — just east of state Route 125— just after 11 p.m. June 2. Love died before he could be taken to a hospital. On Wednesday, authorities said detectives are seeking information about the shooter and the events that led to the shooting. Lt. Thomas Seiver said detectives are unsure if the shooting was a random or targeted attack. He said detectives have “thoroughly investigated” the case, adding that surveillance video from the dispensary was available. Joining Love’s family in asking anyone with information to step forward, Seiver said there were more than a dozen people who fled the area after the shooting and people in and around the dispensary at the time of the shooting may have information that could be helpful to investigators. “We need you to come forward and tell us what you saw,” the lieutenant said. Darryn Cooper, who called Love a dear friend, said an arrest in the case would bring a sense of peace, comfort and closure to Love’s family, including his wife, 12-year-old daughter and two adult sons. “We don’t want another family to go through what we’re going through today,” he said. Cooper sent a message to the shooter: “Do the right thing,” he said. “Turn yourself in.” Love’s nephew, Geoffrey Olson, called his death a senseless act of violence. “We are praying constantly for justice to be done,” said Pastor Laverne Mitchell of the House of Hope Community Church in Lemon Grove.
