Lindenhurst Middle School security officer awarded with Heroism Award
LINDENHURST, NY May 15 2023– A school security officer and former fire chief was recently recognized by the Town of Babylon for his heroic actions involving a stabbing at Lindenhurst Middle School.
Michael DeGregorio was awarded the Heroism Award, the Town’s highest honor, at a recent Town Board meeting on Wednesday.
On March 27, Michael DeGregorio was notified of an altercation on the second floor of the Lindenhurst Middle School.
The former Lindenhurst Fire Department chief and retired member of the NYPD arrived to the scene and noticed a student against the wall, bleeding profusely from his right leg. A teacher rendering aid to the student, the town said.
DeGregorio then removed his belt to be used as a tourniquet to control the bleeding until EMS personnel arrived.
“With an injury as severe as this wound was, every second counts,” said Councilman and Public Safety Chairman Terence McSweeney.
“Ex-Chief Mike DeGregorio was in the right place at the right time, and the Lindenhurst community is lucky to have him in our schools, focusing on the safety and well-being of the children.”
