Man, 33, stabbed to death, security officer slashed at homeless shelter
Queens NY March 20 2021
A 33-year-old man was stabbed to death by a fellow resident at a Queens hotel-turned-homeless shelter during a wild fight in a park across the street, police said Thursday.
The violence exploded in Baisley Pond Park across from Garden Inn & Suites, a Springfield Gardens hotel that provides rooms to the city’s Department of Homeless Services, about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday.
The 33-year-old victim was stabbed in the chest, back and neck battling another resident. Medics rushed him to Jamaica Hospital, but he could not be saved.
A 40-year-old security guard who tried to break up the fight was slashed in the leg and hand. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital along with the 28-year-old suspect, who had a slash wound to his leg. Their injuries are minor.
Police recovered a knife and a box cutter from the scene. It was not immediately clear if the suspect used both weapons or if the victim was also armed.
On Jan. 31, 2020, a father of two, Jose De La Cruz, 54, was walking home from his night shift at a nearby bodega when he was killed near the hotel by a man who knifed him in the chest. Nobody has been arrested in that case.
