Man arrested after assaulting security guard, pulling knife on officers
TULSA, Okla. July 1 2021 Tulsa police arrested a man overnight who pulled a knife on an officer.
It happened at the QuikTrip near 14th and Denver around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Police were called about a disturbance with a security guard.
The suspect, identified as Gerald Cunningham, had been previously banned from the property, but he returned and was stealing items from inside the store.
The security guard confronted him, and a physical altercation ensued.
During the altercation, the suspect took a swing at the security guard and threw a hot cup of coffee in his face, police say.
When they arrived, police say they told the suspect he was under arrest.
He tried to run, so officers used a taser with no effect.
Officers then deployed less lethal launcher rounds to the legs also with no effect, and that’s when police say he turned around with a knife and said, “If you shoot me again, I will stab you.”
A chase ensued on foot through multiple downtown streets after he tried to run.
Police say they attempted multiple times to de-escalate the situation before tasing him again and arresting him.
The knife was recovered from the suspect after he was taken into custody.
Cunningham is facing charges of obstructing a police officer, five counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and resisting arrest.
