Man arrested after shooting gun during altercation with school security guard
Patterson NJ May 18, 2023 A man was arrested Tuesday in Paterson after he had an altercation with a school security guard that involved an exchange of gunfire, authorities said.
Few details about what allegedly happened between the two men were shared by investigators, but the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office said police responded to the area of the incident around 9 a.m. Tuesday at an intersection near Paterson Public School No. 21.
A preliminary investigation alleged there was a verbal altercation between a man, identified Wednesday as 56-year-old Paterson resident Robert Carroll, and a school security guard where gunfire was exchanged, the office said. Neither man was shot during the incident.
“The circumstances surrounding the altercation are still open and remain under investigation,” the office said in a statement. A spokesperson from the office did not respond to email seeking more information.
Carroll was arrested shortly after 12:30 p.m. in the intersection of 12th Avenue and Rosa Park Boulevard in Paterson and was charged with attempted murder and weapons-related offenses, investigators said.
He was scheduled to appear at Central Judicial Processing Court on Thursday and prosecutors said they will seek to have him jailed before his trial begins. Attorney information for him was not immediately available.
