Man arrested, charged after dragging security guard from vehicle to resist arrest
WACO, TX Aug 21 2019 — A man was arrested and charged after he dragged an off-duty TSTC officer from his car after he shoplifted at Richland Mall.
Police said multiple callers were reporting that an officer was trying to detain a shoplifter at Dillard’s. Callers stated that the shoplifter was fighting with the officer.
Citizens then said the officer was being dragged by the suspect’s vehicle and the fleeing suspect vehicle crashed into multiple cars in the parking lot.
A citizen reported that they were helping the officer by keeping the suspect inside the vehicle. The suspect was trying to escape the vehicle and trying to kick the windows to escape.
Once officers arrived on the scene, the suspect was identified as Andre Boyd, 46.
It was later discovered that a TSTC officer, Roy Luna, was working off-duty security for Dillard’s. He was trying to arrest Boyd for theft outside of the store.
Luna said that a struggle ensued with Boyd, but he managed to break free a ran to his vehicle.
Luna tried to arrest Boyd at the suspect’s vehicle. Boyd then made it inside the vehicle and Luna deployed his taser. Boyd was able to start his car and dragged officer Luna with him.
When Luna was still trying to arrest him, Body struck three vehicles, and then two more still dragging Luna.
During this attempt to flee, Luna’s left leg was crushed between the suspect’s vehicle and another car.
Luna was still deploying the taser while he was still being dragged by the vehicle.
When the suspect struck a fifth vehicle, it then stopped. Luna was able to break free from Boyd and with the help of citizens, they were able to keep Boyd inside his vehicle until officers arrived on the scene.
Officers determined that Boyd had stolen over $750 in merchandise.
Luna was transported to a local hospital. He received significant injuries to his left leg from being rushed by the suspect vehicle’s door.
Luna is expected to be released from the hospital.
Boyd was treated and released. He is now charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated assault against an officer and resisting arrest.
Boyd was transported to the McLennan County Jail.
His bond has not been set yet.
