Man charged for fighting security and police officers at Newport Folk Festival
NEWPORT RI Aug 3 2018 — State Department of Environmental Management police officers made one arrest over the course of the Newport Folk Festival at Fort Adams State Park on Sunday around 3 p.m. when a Queens, New York, man allegedly jumped onto the Quad Stage.
Kendall May, 27, resisted forcefully when security officers tried to remove him from the stage, according to information from Michael Healey, the chief public affairs officer for the state Department of Environmental Management. May was charged with one count each of simple assault and disorderly conduct.
It took three environmental police officers and one DEM parks and recreation staff member to subdue May, according to an email from Healey on Monday. He appeared to be “heavily under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
Multiple officers held May’s arms behind his back as they led him through the extended archway between the Quad and Harbor stages and beyond the rails that separated festival-goers from security. The man appeared to be resisting, and officers told people to back off to allow them to pass by. A security member instructed people who had gathered along the rails to continue moving so as to not block the flow of walkers.
May was transported to Newport Hospital. Healey wrote he did not know whether he was treated for injuries suffered during the arrest or for the “suspected intoxication.” He was then taken to the DEM Division of Law Enforcement’s marine base in Wickford, where he was released on bail, Healey wrote.
