Man charged in assault of Redding library security officer
REDDING, Calif. Nov 23 2019 Redding police say a man was arrested for a hate crime at the Redding Library on Tuesday afternoon. Police say the suspect recently arrived from Florida and has been arrested twice in two days.
Police were called to the Redding Library shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday for reports that a man had attacked the security guard and threatened an African American man who had asked him to leave the library.
Witnesses told police that Gill Gideon Bond, 59, had been asked to leave because he was drinking alcohol inside the library. That’s when witnesses say Bond threatened to kill the man who asked him to leave and used racial slurs.
The security guard then asked Bond to leave and witnesses say at that point bond pulled a knife from his pocket and held it at his side while he was hitting the security guard with his free hand.
Police officers say nearby Good Samaritans came to the aid of the guard but Bond attacked them too, punching those who came close to him and threatening to kill anyone near him. Officers pepper-sprayed Bond and arrested him.
Bond arrived in Redding from Florida in early November and has been arrested twice in the last two days.
Bond was booked into the Shasta County Jail on charges of brandishing a weapon, assault, criminal threats, resisting arrest, and a hate crime.
