Athens GA Feb 2 2018
Authorities are investigating the death of a man in the Clarke County Jail parking lot after shot himself in the head.
Epifanio Rodriguez, spokesman for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, said the man had no known connection with the jail or its personnel and was not in police custody at the time of the shooting.
What police know is that surveillance video of the area shows the 53-year-old man from Oglethorpe County driving into the jail’s parking lot, where he exited the vehicle and killed himself
Police said that they were called to the shooting at around 6: 30 p.m. and that responding officers found the deceased man in the parking lot.
Police reviewing surveillance footage said that at the time of the shooting, no one else was around and that no other vehicles had entered the area.
Police did not know why the man chose the Athens jail as the location to end his life, Rodriguez said.
The man left a note in the car, but police did not disclose the its contents.
“Out of respect for the family and deceased, we are not going to release why he took his own life,” Rodriguez said.
