Man dies at Port of Longview , security officer injured after ship’s line snaps
LONGVIEW, Wash June 29 2018 One man died and several others were injured Thursday morning after a line from a ship to the dock snapped in half.
According to Port of Longview officials, the snapped line recoiled and fatally struck ILWU member Byron Jacobs, 34. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The chief mate aboard the vessel was also struck and is in critical condition at Southwest Washington Medical Center. Another longshoreman and security guard also received non-life-threatening injuries.
“This is a tragic day on the waterfront,” ILWU Local 21 President Jake Ford said. “Byron was an active member of the union, loved his work and will be incredibly missed.”
The vessel, MV ANSAC Splendor, remains docked at the Port’s Berth 5.
