Man Headbutts, Punches Security Guards After Alleged Theft At Whole Foods
AUSTIN, TEXAS Sept 20 2018 — A man accused of stealing more than $20 in food from the Whole Foods grocery store near downtown Austin was arrested last week, but not before head-butting a security guard when confronted in the parking lot, according to a published report.
The incident occurred Sept. 13, the Austin American-Statesman reported, but details were only made available via court documents. According to an arrest affidavit, Evan Joseph Nesby, 33, walked out of the Whole Foods store on 5th Street and Lamar Boulevard clutching three container trays of hot food from the food island before being pursued by security guards.
When confronted, Nesby said he was headed to his car to retrieve his credit card before walking away. This prompted the security guards to restrain the man, which led to Nesby allegedly punching one of the guards and head-butting another, according to the report.
Nesby subsequently was charged with robbery and assault on a security officer in connection with the incident, according to the affidavits referenced in the Statesman report. The man also was booked on three drug possession charges and a charge of driving with an invalid license with previous convictions, jail records indicate.
Nesby remained in the Travis County Jail on Tuesday with a combined bail on six charges set at $56,000.
