Man impersonated police and security officer, emergency responder
MERRIMACK, N.H. March 11 2019
Police said a man wanted for a series of police and first responder impersonation incidents dating back to October 2018 was arrested.
Investigators said several witnesses saw Obadiah Croteau, 21, driving a green Dodge Charger with an overhead light bar, which led many to believe it was a New Hampshire State Police cruiser.
According to police, Croteau’s car had been seen stopped at multiple accident scenes in Merrimack.
“Callers who were on the line with 911 believed based on seeing the car that there was actually an officer already on scene, when in fact, officers were not on scene,” Merrimack Police said.
Police said Croteau was reportedly seen wearing a security uniform and represented himself to be a first responder and that he could provide medical care if needed at the scene.
Investigators said Croteau also had stopped with a disabled vehicle and identified himself as being with a roadside service company, and sought some personal information from the driver.
Police said the car in question, in addition to having an overhead light bar, was also equipped with much of the same equipment that would be found in a police cruiser.
Croteau told police the car belongs to his company, Propel Entertainment, and that they provide executive protection and bodyguard services. Police said Croteau had an ID card printer and several different identification cards which identified him as an “Executive Protection Officer” as well as a “First Responder.”
According to police, Croteau didn’t have the licenses needed under New Hampshire law to provide security services or medical services.
Croteau was charged with false impersonation of law enforcement, a felony, as well as security services license required and emergency medical and trauma services acts prohibited, both misdemeanors.
Croteau was released on personal recognizance. He was scheduled to appear in the Hillsborough County Superior Court on March 21 to answer to the charges.
