Man involved in Tacoma Mall incident dies in Interstate 5 crash
TACOMA, Wash .March 18 2018Â Â – What started as a disturbance call at Tacoma Mall ended with a man being struck on Interstate 5 Thursday night, as he tried to run from officers, according to police.
Police said just around 7:10 p.m., mall security officers began following a man, who was reportedly harassing people at the mall.
The man then ran out of the mall and headed towards I-5.
A Tacoma Police Officer arrived just as the man jumped over a fence and ran onto the freeway. He was then hit by an SUV.
The incident shut down all lanes of southbound I-5 near 48th street just before 7:30 p.m.
The driver of the SUV exited the freeway, then called 911 and cooperated with investigators. The driver was questioned by the State Patrol and then released.
Two lanes on southbound I-5 were reopened to traffic about an hour later.
All lanes were back open around 9:30 p.m.
