Man punches Cleveland Home Depot security agent after trying to use fake receipt to return items
CLEVELAND, Ohio Sept 11 2018– An unidentified man tried to use a fake receipt to return items he’d just placed into his shopping cart at the Steelyard Commons Home Depot, then punched a loss prevention agent who confronted him, police said.
The altercation happened Saturday at the store on Steelyard Drive, according to a police report. No arrests have been made in the case.
Home Depot employees recognized the man when he walked into the store just before 6 p.m. because the man was previously suspected of using fake receipts to return items in exchange for cash, the police report says.
The security agent watched the man take two garbage cans, two shingle remover tools, and eight wooden planks off the shelves and place them into a cart. The man then walked over to a register and tried to return the items with a fake receipt for $140, the police report says.
The security guard confronted the man and told him to return the items. The man responded by punching the security guard in the face and the side, the police report says.
The man then ran from the store and rode away on a bicycle.
Investigators are reviewing surveillance video of the incident in an attempt to identify the man, the police report says.
