Man stalks security officer, threats become more violent
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Aug 17 2018 She was hired as a security officer to keep out the troublemakers, but now Albuquerque Police say as much as she tries to keep one man away, he’s stalking her and his threats are getting violent.
“We look at escalation,” Officer Simon Drobik said.
APD said that’s exactly what’s happening in the case involving 31-year-old Benjamin Olguin.
Monday, Olguin was arrested and charged with aggravated stalking after police said he showed up to El Mezquite Market when he wasn’t supposed to be there.
His first stalking charge came in May. A private security officer called police saying Olguin continued to show up at the property looking for her at least a dozen times.
The woman also told officers Olguin showed up and flashed a gun at her fiance. That day, officers found Oguin had six rounds of ammunition and two knives in his car.
“Eventually these guys have to be put in jail because they won’t stop stalking an individual and they become obsessed,” Officer Drobik said.
Since May, he’s had at least two warrants out for his arrest for failing to comply with conditions of release.
Then Monday, Olguin showed up at the market again.
“She was able to detain him at one point until we arrived,” Officer Drobik said.
According to the criminal complaint Olguin threatened to kill the woman and said if he didn’t do it that day he’d be back to “finish the job.”
Wednesday in court, the judge acknowledged the new case with more serious charges, that included aggravated stalking.
It’s a felony charge that police hope keeps Olguin behind bars this time.
“In this case, this guy just got arrested for it and he’s not getting the message, so he will be sitting in jail and the message should be served to him in jail: ‘stop doing this.'” Officer Drobik said.
The woman has filed a restraining order against Olguin.
Prosecutors have filed a motion to keep Olguin behind bars until trial. That hearing is set for Friday.
