Augusta ME March 15 2023
A man will spend more than a year in prison after being convicted of assault on a federal officer at the Muskie Federal Building in Augusta.
Derik Broox Wight, 41, plead guilty to assaulting the officer after he entered the federal building in April of 2022.
Officials say Wight walked up to the security screening station, pressed a security officer against a wall, and put a knife to his throat.
A second security officer took out his gun and ordered Wight to drop the knife. When Wight did not put down the weapon, the second officer fired his gun, hitting the 41-year-old with a single bullet.
He was then taken to a hospital, where he was later charged.
“When this senseless attack took place, FPS-contracted Protective Security Officers acted professionally and swiftly to stop the attack and ensure the safety of all involved,” said Joseph Carriuolo, Acting Regional Director, Region 1, Federal Protective Service.
Multiple agencies investigated the case, including the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Augusta Police Department.
