Man with “edged” weapon shot at Minneapolis court
MINNEAPOLIS MN Dec 20 2017— A man being interviewed by Minneapolis police at City Hall was shot by officers after injuring himself with an “edged weapon” late Monday afternoon, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo.
The wounded man was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, but his condition was not yet known, Arradondo told reporters at a news conference Monday night at City Hall, where police headquarters are located.
No officers were injured.
The man had been left alone by investigators in an interview room about 4:40 p.m. When they returned, they found he had used the weapon to injure himself, Arradondo said.
After attempting to subdue the man, officers fired their weapons, he said.
Arradondo did not say how many officers were involved in the shooting, how the man was able to conceal the weapon and get it inside City Hall, or if he threatened officers with the weapon.
It also wasn’t clear what the man was being questioned about or whether he was the subject of a police investigation.
The area on the second floor of City Hall where the shooting took place houses several MPD investigative units, Arradondo said.
Shortly after the shooting, the building was placed on lockdown, according to a security guard working the front entrance.
A tweet posted to the MPD Twitter account shortly after 6 p.m. said the incident was confined to City Hall and that there is no danger to the public.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, and a BCA Crime Scene Team van was parked outside City Hall.
The interview room where the shooting took place is equipped with video cameras, and any relevant footage will be handed over to the BCA, Arradondo said.
|The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on standard administrative leave, Arradondo said. They have not yet been identified.
