Marion County deputy working security shot in gun battle with robbery suspects at IHOP
Indianapolis IN December 2 2018 A Marion County sheriff’s deputy working as an off-duty security guard was shot at an IHOP restaurant on the northwest side following an exchange of gunfire with two robbery suspects early Saturday, police and company officials said.
The shooting happened about 1 a.m. at the IHOP at 6901 West 38th St., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Sgt. James Gillespie said.
Sgt. David Clemons was taken to a hospital in fair condition, treated for a gunshot wound to the leg and released, according to a tweet from the sheriff’s office. Another deputy, Entwan Norris, was unharmed.
Clemons was shot after two men tried to rob the restaurant and pointed a gun at an employee, said IHOP spokeswoman Stephanie Peterson.
She said the deputy fired a shot at the suspect and the robber fired back, striking him in the leg. The sheriff’s office, in a tweet, said Clemons and Norris were attempting to stop a “robbery in progress.”
Peterson said two suspects were in custody, but IMPD could not confirm that. She said 10 customers were in the restaurant at the time and no one else was injured.
“We’re thankful that this incident did not escalate further and our thoughts are with the security guard — an an off-duty officer — and his family as he recovers from his injuries,” Peterson said in an email.
Detectives at the scene interviewed about 20 witnesses, Gillespie said.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Katie Carlson referred questions about the shooting to the IMPD, which is leading the investigation.
