McKeesport Area School District considering its own police force
McKeesport PA November 24 2018
The McKeesport Area School District is in the very early stages of figuring out whether to start its own school police force.
District spokesperson Kristen James said the board voted last month to take “the first initial step to investigate if that’s something we’d want to do.”
Ms. James added the school district recently applied for a $4 million state safety grant. She said potentially starting a school police force is very much dependent on whether the grant is awarded.
She added although the district did apply for $4 million, the state could decide to award a portion or none of the grant to McKeesport Area.
Currently, the district contracts with the City of McKeesport for its school resource officer and has security guards at its buildings.
