MD. officer fatally shoots shoplifter after being dragged by vehicle
Baltimore County MD Aug 2 2017 A shoplifter is dead and an investigation is underway after a security officer the man during a theft incident.
Authorities say that a police officer working security at a Maryland grocery tried to stop a fleeing shoplifter when the officer was dragged by the vehicle.
Fearing for his life, the officer opened fire and fatally wounded the driver.
Baltimore County police spokeswoman Officer Jen Peach said the officer was alerted early Tuesday to a man who stole laundry detergent and related items at Giant Food in Catonsville.
Peach says the officer confronted the man in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, shooting him as the officer was dragged 108 feet (33 meters). The man died at the scene. The officer wasn’t injured.
The officer wasn’t wearing a body camera, but Peach says investigators are reviewing surveillance video.
She says the department doesn’t release races of officers or people shot.
Another man in the vehicle complained of pain and was taken to a hospital.
