Memphis, Lights, Gas & Water security officer shot, saved by body armor
MEMPHIS, Tenn. July 13 2022— A suspect accused of shooting a Memphis, Lights, Gas & Water (MLGW) security officer on Monday, July 11 tried to evade police, but he was captured and led away in handcuffs.
Police were dispatched to the MLGW facility at 1180 Tupelo Street at 11:13 p.m.
The security officer told police he heard 5-7 shots in the vicinity and proceeded to check the location of the gunfire.
According to the police report, the victim spotted a Black male wearing a camouflage safety vest and black pants. The security guard reports asking the subject to show his hands, that’s when he said he heard five more gunshots and saw the barrel flashing toward him.
The security officer was shot once in the chest and suffered an abrasion because according to police, the security officer was wearing a bullet-resistant vest.
“It threatens everybody’s safety. A lot of stuff is going on in the city that needs to be corrected,” a neighbor said anonymously. “Man, he needs locking up doing all that.”
Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Dillon Rone. Police said Rone faces several charges including, criminal attempt first-degree murder, escape, and evading arrest.
FOX13 also learned that Rone is linked to a critical hit-and-run crash that occurred the same night, moments before the shooting. The crash happened at the intersection of Hollywood and Vollintine, leaving four passengers injured, including a 6-year-old child.
“They should just lock him up forever,” said Sidney Johnson, a neighbor in the Hollywood community.
The report goes on to say Rone fled the scene of the crash.
Private Officer International, a security and law enforcement group reported that this is the third security officer who has been shot in the past two weeks that has survived because they were wearing body armor.
