Mercy Medical Center security detains patient for stealing car
CANTON OH Oct 4 2017 A newly released Mercy Medical Center patient is accused of stealing a car that had just been parked outside the hospital’s emergency room.
Police said the accused car thief was only gone about a half an hour.
He brought the car back, said Lt. John Bosley of the Canton Police Department’s Patrol Division.
Police arrested Duane P. Bowyer, 53, of Scio, at 9:35 a.m. Monday at the hospital on a felony charge of grand theft of a motor vehicle, Stark County Jail records show.
Bosley said Bowyer had been a patient at the hospital and had just been released when the incident occurred. He did not know why Bowyer had been a patient.
As Bowyer was being released, a northwest Canton woman drove her 2005 Nissan Sentra into the emergency room parking lot and ran into the emergency room. When she returned to her car, it was gone. So she notified hospital security.
Bosley said security officers reviewed hospital video.
“It shows him coming out and getting into the car. They see this and call us,” Bosley said.
Before police arrive at the hospital, Bowyer returned.
Security officers detained him until the police officers arrived. Bosley said police reviewed the video and then arrested Bowyer, who is listed on the police report as a stranger to the woman.
Bowyer remained in the jail early Tuesday, held in lieu of $50,000 bond pending a Canton Municipal Court hearing.
