Michigan City man arrested for attacking court security officers
MICHIGAN CITY IN October 21 2018 — A Michigan City man was arrested Friday morning for allegedly “sucker” punching two court security officers at the LaPorte County Courthouse.
Joshua Duncan, 37, entered the courthouse about 11:30 a.m. Friday and as he entered the security check point, he allegedly struck the first officer, without provocation, in the nose, according to LaPorte County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ronald Heeg.
Duncan then allegedly turned towards the second officer and began physically assaulting him. The first officer drew his taser and deployed it on Duncan. Both deputies were eventually able to gain control and handcuff Duncan, Heeg said.
Duncan was transported to the LaPorte County Jail with the assistance of the Michigan City Police Department where he is being held on two preliminary counts of level 5 felony battery of a law enforcement officer.
Both deputies were transported to Franciscan Hospital Michigan City for their injuries. The first officer received a severe nose injury and the second suffered minor scratches to his arms.
“At this time, it’s unknown as to any motive, or as to why Mr. Duncan attacked these deputies,” Heeg said. “Sheriff John T. Boyd wishes to commend both deputies for their quick action and resolve, to take Duncan into custody even though they were injured, thus preventing any harm to the other county employees or citizens that were in the courthouse at the time of this incident.”
