Michigan Medicine Security is adding two new K-9 teams to its roster.
Officers Joe Medrano and Charles “Chan” Duckworth and their K-9 partners, Maizy and Loken, are currently in training and expected to be fully certified in mid-December.
Once official, Medrano and Maizy will primarily serve the main medical campus, with a focus on Adult Emergency Services. Duckworth and Loken will make the rounds at ambulatory care sites across U-M Health.
Both teams will enhance safety and security for the Michigan Medicine community by reducing stress and anxiety among patients, visitors, faculty and staff, and by detecting dangerous materials.
“We look forward to providing this additional level of protection and comfort,” said Brian Uridge, DPSS deputy director and Michigan Medicine Security director. “We saw such a positive impact with our first K-9, Leo. We are excited to resume and expand the program with not one but two K-9 teams that will serve the entire health system.”
In the coming weeks, Maizy and Loken will continue getting used to the sights, sounds, and fast-paced action in the hospital and at ambulatory care locations.
