Middleboro man charged in tirade, assault on staff at Brockton hospital
BROCKTON MA May 31 2017 – A man who was cleared to leave a city hospital’s emergency room decided he wanted to go to jail – so he went on a tirade in which he took his clothes off and verbally assaulted staff, police said.
Four police officers responded to the emergency room at Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital, about 6 p.m., Sunday, for an unwanted guest disturbance.
A man, identified by police as David A. Dibenedetto, went to the hospital seeking unknown medical attention, but was released by a doctor shortly after.
“He decided he did not like the report given by the doctor,” police Lt. William Hallisey said. “He proceeded to the nurse’s station yelling, screaming and swearing that he wanted to be seen by a doctor again and wanted something to eat.”
Dibenedetto began swearing at other patients in the busy emergency room. Security guards began escorting him out of the hospital, but he “began taking his clothes off and continued a verbal assault” on a female security guard and male nurse, Hallisey said.
“He got into a fighting stance, challenging security and hospital staff,” Hallisey said. “He said he wanted to go to jail.”
The officers arrived at the emergency room at that time and could hear Dibenedetto yelling and screaming. He was brought to the ground by the officers because he was resisting arrest, but was eventually taken into custody, Hallisey said.
During booking at the police station, he continued to be verbally combative and refused to comply with the officers’ orders, including having his photo taken, Hallisey said.
Dibenedetto, 42, of 80 East Grove St., Apt. C, was arrested and charged with assault, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest, threats to commit a crime and trespassing. He also had two warrants.
Dibenedetto is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in Brockton District Court.
