Missouri State University security manager dies in hit and run crash
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. July 22 2019 The man who died in a hit-and-run crash this week worked for Missouri State University. Matt Brown was the Manager for Campus Safety.
The crash happened Thursday on South Campbell near Republic Road.
Police say a stolen Budget Rental box truck hit Matt’s car, sending him crashing into an SUV on the other side of the road.
David Hall is Missouri State’s Director of Safety and worked with Matt Brown every day.
“It’s just a state of disbelief that you’ve been with them just that afternoon and talking about the things you’re going to do tomorrow,” Hall said.
His shock grew to frustration, when Hall learned the details of the crash.
“Whenever it’s a preventable accident on someone who’s dedicated their life to preventing accidents for others, that’s truly tragic,” he said.
Hall said Matt was devoted to the university and to keeping students safe. As the Manager for Campus Safety, he was responsible for all things security, like unlocking buildings, giving presentations and training students and staff. Hall said he went above and beyond the job.
“This is really going to be hard shoes to fill,” Hall said.
Matt was 42. He leaves behind his wife, three children and a legacy of kindness.
“Whenever you potentially had a fine, absolutely a pillar of our campus that we’ve lost, that wasn’t necessary, you know, that’s true word of tragedy,” Hall said.
Just minutes after the crash that killed Matt, witnesses say the same Budget Rental box truck caused another wreck at National and Sunshine. The driver of the box truck is still on the loose.
