Mobile bank robbery suspect’s note includes his home address
MOBILE, Alabama April 5 2018 Gregory Owens, 55, of Mobile walked into the Hancock Bank on Demetropolis Road last September intending to rob it, according to US Attorney Richard Moore. A press release from the U.S. Department of Justice outlines the details of the crime.
According to the DOJ, on September 14, 2017, Owens handed the teller a note demanding money and, when the teller hesitated, pulled out a green handgun and pointed it at her. In fear, the teller handed Owens just over $5.600.00 in cash and a dye pack.
Owens fled the bank with the money and almost immediately the dye pack exploded. Owens dropped the money and disappeared.
When officers arrived at the bank to investigate they learned that the note Owens handed to the teller included his address. Investigators went to the address and spoke with Owens’ mother who gave officers her son’s cell phone number.
Owens was located at an area hotel by tracking that cell phone and was still wearing the same clothes from the robbery when officers arrived. The green firearm used in the robbery was located in Owens car after he gave officers consent to search it.
Owens pleaded guilty to the charges on December 29. 2017. The U.S. Department of Justice announced today that Owens was sentenced to 121 months in Federal Prison for bank robbery and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, bank robbery.
