N.J. police department mourning death of longtime officer who took his own life
Hamilton NJ May 3 2022 The Hamilton Police Department on Monday announced the death of Mark Horan, a lieutenant who died at his Robbinsville home on Saturday afternoon.
Officers found Horan dead of a gunshot wound. An investigation found he died by suicide, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said.
He was 52.
Hamilton Police Chief James Stevens described Horan, a police officer since 1998, as an exemplary police officer who was well-liked and well respected in the department, and in area law enforcement communities. He was also “a devoted husband and father of five.”
“On behalf of the entire Police Division, our thoughts and prayers are with Lieutenant Horan’s family,” Stevens said.
“I ask the Hamilton Township community to join me in keeping the Horan family and Hamilton Police Division family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” Hamilton Mayor Jeff Martin said.
Horan served in the patrol, anti-crime and detective units as an officer and supervisor. He was promoted to sergeant in 2010 and lieutenant in 2017. He was currently serving as an administrative supervisor in patrol. Before being a sworn officer, Horan was a dispatcher for nearly seven years and in all served Hamilton for over 30 years.
“The family requests privacy during this difficult time. I would like to thank all of the outside agencies that have given us assistance through this difficult time,” Stevens also said in a statement.
