Nashville security officer shoots at gunman who crashed car, came at him with gun
Nashville TN Oct 4 2018 Metro Nashville Police say one person died after a shooting outside an East Nashville restaurant on Tuesday evening.
People in two cars, a Ford Mustang and a Chevrolet Impala, “opened fire on each other” around 6:30 p.m., police report.
The shots were fired near the intersection of W. Eastland Avenue and McFerrin Avenue. Both Mas Tacos and The Pharmacy Burger Parlor & Beer Garden sit at that corner. Police say no one in the restaurants were injured.
One man, an occupant of the Mustang, police report, died after the shooting. Police say that he got out of his car before the shooting started.
On Wednesday, police identified the victim as Deangelo Knox, 25.
At some point, Knox crashed a vehicle and was shot by a security guard who saw Knox coming toward him with a gun in his hand.
Inside The Pharmacy’s fence, a diner said she was terrified that the shots she heard meant she was in the middle of a mass shooting.
“In hindsight, it doesn’t make much sense since it wasn’t a crowded area, but the sound of that gun just firing over and over and over again made me think we were in serious danger,” Jenny Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said she and her boyfriend, Randy Haddock, were sitting in the fenced garden area behind The Pharmacy when they heard the shots. Haddock recognized the gunfire for what it was, and they both sought cover.
“After the shots stopped, it was eerily quiet. Everyone froze,” she said. When the shots stopped, some people ran out of the restaurant, but others stayed behind and were eventually questioned by police.
Rodriguez was not sure exactly how many shots were fired, but estimated 30 or 40 were possible.
“I will never forget that moment,” she said.
A security guard at The Pharmacy fired a shot in the direction of the two vehicles, according to Kris Mumford, police spokesperson. It is not known if that was the shot that killed Knox, and multiple shell casings were found at the crime scene.
Police recovered a gun from the deceased man and found another inside the Impala, said Mumford.
