New law allows Florida school security to make arrests on campus
Tallahassee FL July 13 2022
A Florida law known as HB 1421, the school safety bill, breezed through House and Senate and was signed into law by Gov. DeSantis.
The new school safety bill takes important steps in the road to ensuring safer schools across Florida.
The new legislation aims to prevent mass casualty events through an emphasis on mental health awareness, increased training for school security and local law enforcement, and predetermined courses of action for reunification and parent communication.
More specifically, it enacts mandated mental health awareness training for 80% of a school’s personnel, requires local law enforcement to take part in active shooter drills, and ensures that schools have a detailed plan for student-parent reunification should an emergency occur.
Additionally, the bill allows school security staff to make arrests at the schools.
School safety is at the forefront of our minds as school administrators 365 days a year, and we have made some changes that will better protect our children.
