New Private Security Program Launched In Downtown Santa Monica
Santa Monica CA June 29, 2023 In response to safety concerns and evolving needs of the community, Downtown Santa Monica Inc. will allocate up to $1.7 million to fund private security downtown.
With a goal to bolster safety and security in Downtown Santa Monica, DTSM Inc. has partnered with security company Covered 6 to supplement services provided by the city’s police force.
“We are excited to embark on this pilot program, which represents a crucial step towards delivering an elevated safety experience for everyone in Downtown Santa Monica. Our commitment to the community’s well-being is unwavering, and this private security initiative will enable us to address changing safety needs in a proactive and comprehensive manner,” said DTSM Inc. CEO Andrew Thomas.
The partnership is part of a one-year pilot program that aims to bring a safer experience Downtown for residents, visitors and businesses. Covered 6 provides services for various other public and private entities, including the City of Beverly Hills.
The new private security will replace the current “observe and report” initiative and will allow officers to respond quicker to security calls, officials said. The new security officers will be equipped with body cameras and will be unarmed, with the exception of the shift supervisor, according to DTSM Inc. Board Chair Eric Sedman.
“Our team is fully committed to working closely with DTSM, Inc. and in tandem with the SMPD. Together, we will leverage our combined expertise to effectively address the unique security challenges faced by the Downtown Santa Monica community, ensuring their safety and well-being,” said Civered 6 CEO Chris Dunn.
Officials said the pilot program is expected to start in the near future, and they encouraged community members to share feedback during the duration of the program.
