North Charleston Police say an armed security officer was shot at an apartment complex
North Charleston SC March 5 2022
North Charleston Police say an armed security officer was shot Saturday near the guard shack at an apartment complex.
Police responded at 7:59 p.m. to a report of an officer shot near the main entrance to Icon at Park Circle in the 1900 block of McMillian Avenue, an incident report states.
Officers found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police have not named a suspect in the shooting and no arrests have been made.
There was no immediate word on the victim’s condition.
Anyone with information on the shooting should call North Charleston Police at 843-740-2800 or Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.
Police, clergy and community members joined together Thursday to march in solidarity, a direct response to one of three shootings over the weekend.
Shirley Phyall lives in the apartment complex. She says people are scared.
“I do not know where these people are coming from, but when I first moved here, it was nothing like this. Now, we have to walk up front to get our pizza from the Dominos truck, because they are too afraid to come in here,” says Phyall.
Which is exactly why NCPD is hoping to make a change.
“We want to make sure that these neighborhoods don’t feel that they cannot come out, that they cannot send their kids out to play or just be kids. In one shooting a 15-year-old lost his life, so we really need this time to reconnect as a community,” says NCPD Lt. Tireka Cerone who was leading the event.
Latasha Hayre is marching for a different reason.
Her mother-in-law was shot and killed at the same apartment complex one year ago.
She is still searching for answers.
“Walking through here with a sign of my mother-in law is not a good way to remember her. Walking through the path she died is not a good way to remember her,” says Hayre.
Hayre says more needs to be done to stop the violence. Walks like these need to happen more often.
“Events like this help. Does it ease the pain? A little bit. Because you see faces in the crowd and people care.”
NCPD will also be marching on Friday night at 6 p.m. on South Allen Road, where a 15-year-old was killed and three people were injured.
