Norwalk woman charged with DUI after nearly hitting security guard in Stamford
STAMFORD CT October 16 2018— A Norwalk driver was charged with DUI after she nearly struck a Stamford security guard who was trying to keep the woman from operating the vehicle because the guard perceived her to be drunk.
Police were called to Stamford Landing on Southfield Avenue on Friday at about 10 p.m. on the report of security guards trying to keep a white female from driving her car.
When police arrived at the Waterside location, they saw several security guards around a vehicle talking to the driver. As the cruiser approached, the car lurched to life, nearly striking one of the guards. The officer activated the overhead lights and siren and the vehicle immediately pulled over in a parking space.
The officers approached the car and could hear the woman crying and slurring her speech. They could smell alcohol from the woman and the car, Sgt. Sean McGowan said. When the woman, identified as Darlene DiSette, 52, of Newtown Avenue, did not seem to understand officers when they asked her to turn off her car, she was pulled from the vehicle.
DiSette had trouble standing and the more the officers tried to hold her up, the more she seemed to be trying to drop to the ground, McGowan said.
Because of her condition, DiSette could not perform any of the field sobriety tests and she was carried into a waiting cruiser feet first, McGowan said.
In the car, officers allegedly found a three-quarters empty, seven-ounce bottle of Jameson Irish whiskey in DiSette’s purse.
Sometime after 9 p.m. that night, security officers told police that they were called about a woman who was crying in the parking lot. They went outside and saw DiSette near the boat dock and she appeared intoxicated.
Dissette then stumbled to her car and tried to drive away when police were called, McGowan said. DiSette was charged with driving while under the influence and drinking while driving.
