NY State Police Deploying Drones

The New York State Police will soon deploy drones to help in crime control, surveillance and to reconstruct serious motor vehicle accidents.
The drones will be used to document and help reconstruct serious motor vehicle crashes.
Thanks to Governor Cuomo, the drones will soon be added to the arsenal of crime-fighting equipment used by state troopers.
State police will begin using aerial drones in the north country this month, as part of a program that will soon be expanded throughout the state.
Additionally, unmanned aerial systems will “provide a significant cost savings” over manned aircraft, according to the release, while reducing response times and making operations more efficient and cost effective.
NY state troopers are at the forefront of artificial intelligence as they will deploy drones in certain areas to conduct official police work.
Cuomo’s office says the grants – Olean will receive $7,398 – will help the agencies comply with a forthcoming law requiring law enforcement to video record interrogations for most serious crimes.
The Governor’s Office announced Wednesday that 18 new unmanned aircrafts will be deployed for use by Troop A in Western New York, including Genesee, Orleans, Wyoming and other counties in the Buffalo area.
By April 2018, there will be 14 more drones deployed throughout the state.
Troopers using the drones will be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration and undergo 32 hours of hands-on training.
The New York State Trooper Foundation, which was established to advance training protocols and public services by forging partnerships between State Police and private industry, is donating 16 of the aerial drone systems to the UAS program.
The legislation previously passed the Republican-controlled Senate, but failed in 2015 in the Democratic-controlled Assembly. And that video that ends up not having any law enforcement objective will be deleted after 30 days.
