NY state trooper killed en route to work
Fonda NY November 28 2018 A New York State Police Trooper was killed in a crash on his way to work Tuesday morning in Fonda, State Police say.
State Police say Trooper Jeremy VanNostrand, 36, was rear-ended in his personal vehicle by a box truck and pushed into oncoming traffic while he was stopped in traffic waiting to turn into the New York State Police Fonda station at around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday.
He was then struck by a pickup truck traveling east on Highway 5S.
The trooper was taken to Albany Medical Center where he died.
The driver of the box truck that rear-ended VanNostrand was uninjured. The driver of the pickup that hit the second vehicle is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Police say weather does not appear to be a factor in the crash. No tickets have been issued and the investigation is ongoing.
Trooper VanNostrand served with the New York State Police for six years, since December 2012. Prior to his service with the NYSP, VanNostrand was a correction officer for eight years with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
Trooper VanNostrand is survived by his wife, their daughter, his parents, a sister and brothers.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has directed flags to half-staff in honor of VanNostrand. The governor released the following statement:
“Trooper VanNostrand, who served as a member of the New York State Police for six years, dedicated his life to protecting New Yorkers. His legacy of service, as a State Corrections Officer and then as a member of the New York State Police, was an inspiration to us all, and his example will live on for generations to come.
I am directing that flags be flown at half-staff in honor of Trooper VanNostrand, and on behalf of all New Yorkers I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
The New York State Troopers PBA issued this statement:
“Trooper VanNostrand served the people of the state of New York with pride and professionalism. He made the ultimate sacrifice and he will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers of Trooper VanNostrand during this difficult time.”
The PBA, as the labor union, will assist with arrangements for the line-of-duty death funeral, as well as assist Trooper VanNostrand’s family and fellow Troopers with whatever needs arise. The PBA’s charity, the Signal 30 Benefit Fund, is accepting donations on behalf of the family of Trooper VanNostrand.
