New York City NY November 16 2019
A police officer is dead and two others critically injured in a car crash on the FDR Drive early Saturday, police sources said.
The deadly accident occurred when the officer, a 25-year-old man driving north on the FDR near 23rd Street at about 2:30 a.m., lost control of his black 2016 Lexus, striking a barrier beneath a pedestrian footbridge, police said.
The driver, who is believed to be an off-duty NYPD officer, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police sources said.
Two other passengers — one of whom is believed to be a city firefighter — were also injured in the smashup. One man, 25, sustained body trauma, police said. Sources said a woman, also 25, lost a leg in the crash.
Both were taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and are now stable, authorities said.
The accident prompted closure of both lanes of the busy highway Saturday morning, officials said.
