Off-Duty Alabama police officer accidently shot cleaning firearm

A police officer was accidentally shot Sunday afternoon while cleaning a firearm according to authorities.
Police and EMS personnel responded to a residence on Mercer Court in the Belforest community of Daphne at around 3 p.m.
The 27-year-old off-duty police officer from the town of Atmore said that he was cleaning his
weapon when a bullet exploded, and shrapnel struck him in the face, head and eyes.
The officer was airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center with serious injuries.
