Off-duty corrections officer accidentally shoots himself, woman in NYC bar
New York City NY May 25 2017 An off-duty New York City Corrections Officer accidentally shot himself and an unidentified woman inside a Hell’s Kitchen bar Tuesday night, after inadvertently discharging his weapon – according to police.
The shooting occurred inside the Mamasita Bar & Grill on Tenth Avenue shortly after 8 p.m., while the unidentified jailer was at a table and appeared to be showing the gun to a woman, said bar owner, Prakash Hundalani, who saw a surveillance video of the incident.
Hundalani said the officer had ordered a shot and beer shortly before the incident, when he entered the bar.
“We saw the surveillance video… [he] comes back from the bathroom, sits at the table… where he wants to show his gun to one of the girls – we see the gun under the table,” said Mamasita owner, Prakash Hundalani.
“It sounded like a gunshot, loud… a lot of people screamed.”
It was not clear if the shot woman was the one who was looking at the gun with the officer. Both victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital with minor injuries – and expected to survive, according to police
“He’s a regular, with us for five or six years – we know him very well. He’s a very good person, very respectful – he was sober,” said the owner of the bar.
Police were investigating the scene Tuesday night.
