Off-duty Dallas security guard fired shots at man breaking into his car
Dallas TX Aug 16 2018 A shooting reported Tuesday night near Turtle Creek turned out to be part of a string of crimes that began in Dallas and ended in Highland Park, police say.
Shortly before 8 p.m., a caller reported that he shot a man and woman he saw break into his vehicle in the 4000 block of U.S. Highway 75 and take property.
The man, a commissioned security guard, said he fired the shots when the pair drove their truck toward him, Dallas police said.
The pair fled into Highland Park, where the man, Devon Flowers, dropped off the woman, identified as Crystal French, in a strip center in the 4200 block of Oak Lawn Avenue near Wycliff Avenue.
Witnesses said Flowers told them that French, who had an injury to her arm, needed help, police said.
Flowers, 30, reportedly sped away from the scene in a truck but crashed into another vehicle a few blocks away at Preston Road and Beverly Drive
Officers from Dallas, Highland Park, University Park and Southern Methodist University responded to help, and a perimeter was set up to search for Flowers, who ran away from the crash, said Lt. Lance Koppa of the Highland Park Department of Public Safety.
An off-duty officer working at Highland Park Village found Flowers shortly after in the 4200 block of Livingston Avenue, he said
Flowers and French were taken to hospitals. Their conditions were not available late Tuesday.
The driver of the vehicle that had been struck by the truck was hospitalized with injuries not thought to be life-threatening, Koppa said.
Flowers and French face two counts of aggravated robbery. Flowers may face additional charges out of Dallas in addition to a charge of failure to leave ID in connection with the Highland Park crash.
Detectives filed two aggravated assault reports against the man (off-duty security guard) who fired the shots. The case will be referred to a grand jury.
