Off-duty officer in custody after firing multiple shots at downtown San Francisco hotel
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. Dec 20 2017 An off-duty Richmond police officer who fired multiple shots inside a hotel on Market Street in downtown San Francisco around 5 a.m. today was taken into custody peacefully after officers negotiated with him, police said.
Officers got reports of possible gunfire at 4:55 a.m. today, and witnesses told them the man shot the gun inside the Four Seasons hotel in the 700 block of Market St., according Officer Robert Rueca.
The man, described as 45 years old by Rueca, refused to come out of the hotel. Police set up a perimeter and communicated with the suspect by telephone, and he peacefully surrendered around 6:30 a.m., Rueca said.
San Francisco police would not say what kind of mental state he was in, but he was sitting up and appeared to be alert as he sat in an ambulance
Investigators determined the officer fired multiple rounds from a handgun, though they would not say whether or not is was the officer’s department-issued firearm. The Four Seasons confirmed the officer was a guest at the hotel.
There were no reports of injuries, according to Rueca.
“We’re very fortunate no one was injured and it was peacefully resolved,” Rueca said.
The man is in custody and is being medically evaluated and the incident is still under investigation, Rueca said.
The officer has been placed on leave.
