Off-duty officer working security shoots armed 17-year-old boy in Houston
Houston TX February 23 2019 An off-duty Houston police officer shot and wounded a 17-year-old boy armed with a handgun while working an extra security shift Thursday afternoon in southwest Houston, authorities said.
The incident began around 4 p.m. Thursday when two men in a black sedan were chasing after a white sedan carrying the teen down Beechnut Street, said HPD spokeswoman Jodi Silva. The vehicles pulled into an apartment complex in the 10600 block of Beechnut where the men in the black sedan exchanged fire with the teen.
The men in the black sedan then fled the scene.
The officer working near the apartment complex, while wearing an HPD uniform, heard the gunfire encountered the teen, Silva said. The officer told him to show his hands but he instead pointed a weapon at the officer, according to police.
The officer discharged his weapon and shot the boy. He was rushed to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, where he is in stable condition.
The officer, who was not identified, has three years of service with the Houston Police Department. He was working for International Management District to provide a visible law enforcement presence in the community, Silva said.
The shooting investigation closed a section of Beechnut Street in both directions for about two hours and snarled traffic on surrounding roads during the busy evening commute.
Police are looking for the men in the black vehicle, Silva said. Surveillance footage at the apartment complex captured the shooting.
